High resistance to ToBRFV in the midi-plum tomato segment

The range of varieties dedicated to professional fruit and vegetable production is enriched with a new introduction in the midi-plum tomato segment. Axia Sementi has announced the launch of Axigem XR, a variety developed to address current phytosanitary pressures on crops. The “XR” acronym highlights the main feature of this strain: high resistance (HR) to Tomato Brown Rugose Fruit Virus (ToBRFV), marking the arrival of this level of protection also for the midi-plum variety.

Regarding the research behind this varietal inclusion, company officials explain: “This variety is the result of years of work, where breeders worked to develop a variety well-adapted to Mediterranean climates, meeting growers’ needs for a genetic resistance package, and reflecting the characteristics popular with marketers and consumers.”

From a vegetative perspective, Axigem XR develops as a compact plant, characterized by regular internodes. The cluster architecture is also regular, structured on a robust rachis with elegant sepals and closely spaced fruits. Phenotypically, the ripened product is identifiable by a distinctive bright red color.

In addition to high resistance to ToBRFV, the variety boasts a structured phytosanitary package. The high resistance (HR) group also includes TOMV:0-2, VA:0, VD:0, FOL:0.1, and PF:B,D. These are joined by an intermediate resistance (IR) to TYLCV. From an operational perspective, current agronomic guidelines for Sicily identify September and January as the ideal transplanting times for Axigem XR.

Regarding the use of genetics in different contexts, company managers add: “For other areas of Italy, trials and evaluations are underway that will help us identify the optimal transplanting times.”
